A l’origine, dans les années 1980, l’impression 3D était principalement considérée pour le prototypage de produits et les besoins de la R&D. Puis progressivement, la possibilité d’utiliser des matériaux de plus en plus variés a permis d’élargir le champ des applications. D’abord utilisée pour les micro-séries, l’impression 3D se développe progressivement pour un usage bien spécifique : le sur-mesure de masse ou « mass customization ». Pour bien comprendre ce concept, prenons l’exemple du secteur médical où le besoin de personnalisation et le volume ressort particulièrement pour les prothèses et les implants.

Avec l’impression 3D, les besoins en équipements sont nettement moins importants que pour les procédés classiques tels que le moulage, l’usinage (retrait de matière), le formage et l’assemblage (soudage, collage, etc.) : un modèle numérique de l’objet, des matériaux qualifiés et une imprimante particulière permettent la production. S’il faut adapter l’objet, il suffit de quelques modifications rapides du modèle numérique et la production repart de plus belle ! Il n’est alors plus question d’avoir des temps longs de fabrication du moule ni d’une mise en œuvre d’un outillage spécifique.

Bien sûr, la réalité n’est pas si simple mais il faut garder en tête les avantages potentiels d’une telle technologie :

• • Concevoir plus rapidement et à moindre coût
  • Pouvoir ajuster rapidement le produit « en quelques clics »
  • Répondre le plus précisément possible à la demande pour de petites ou grandes productions (sur-mesure de masse ou « mass customization »)
  • Mieux communiquer avec les parties prenantes car les données de production sont centralisées au niveau du modèle numérique (nous pouvons aussi penser à l’intégration dans un PLM – Product Lifecycle Management – pour les produits complexes)
  • Pouvoir produire des pièces plus complexes (imaginez les restrictions quand on produit avec un moule !)
  • Être en mesure de produire de manière décentralisée et au plus près des lieux de consommation tout en simplifiant les parties amont et aval de la supply chain. Dans ce cas quid des gains environnementaux ?

La comparaison entre impression 3D et procédés conventionnels n’est pas évidente. En effet, la station d’impression s’intègre généralement dans un processus de fabrication dit conventionnel. Concrètement, dans plus de 50% des cas, des opérations complémentaires de découpe laser, de gravure ou d’usinage CNC (Commande Numérique par Calculateur) sont à prévoir en aval pour aboutir à la pièce finale. De même, en fonction des pièces, des supportages sont nécessaires pour permettre la stabilité de la matière en cours d’impression. Autant d’étapes supplémentaires qui sont de nature à réduire les gains d’efficacité promis par la technologie. Une optimisation de l’usage de l’impression 3D consisterait donc à questionner les phases amont et aval de la station d’impression et d’en viser l’automatisation.

Ces nuances devraient être intégrées dans l’analyse du fameux point de bascule : le volume de production est tel que le coût de production unitaire d’une production conventionnelle est inférieur et donc plus compétitif que celui de l’impression 3D. Par ailleurs, il est aussi permis de douter du fait que le critère économique suffise à acter un changement d’orientation stratégique. La possibilité offerte par la nouvelle technologie permet a priori de concevoir en dehors des cadres de l’existant et d’imaginer des solutions plus adaptées dont la complexité pourra parfois exclure d’emblée la méthode conventionnelle.

Quoiqu’il en soit, avec des telles possibilités, nous devons imaginer et envisager un développement bien plus étendu de l’impression 3D : la production de masse qu’elle soit sur-mesure ou non, avec des matériaux de plus en plus innovants et pour l’ensemble des secteurs d’activités. Avec un marché de la fabrication estimé à 12 700 Mds de dollars en 2018 (dont l’impression 3D qui n’en représente que 0,1%), les perspectives de croissance sont énormes ! Pour le secteur de la santé que nous évoquions en début d’analyse mais aussi pour l’ensemble du secteur industriel.
